Pumpkins love hot weather. They need soil that is deep, rich, well-drained and organic with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Before planting work in lots of compost.

This is the premier pumpkin for eating. Fruits grow to about 8in / 20cm across with sugary-sweet flesh that’s big on flavour. The tiny seed cavity means there’s lots of flesh for pies, bread and other cooking. Just perfect for pumpkin pies. Stores well.

Direct-sow seed after frost danger in spring or start seed indoors four weeks before outdoor planting to obtain healthy transplants. Pumpkins do not transplant well – use paper or fibre pots that can be set directly in the soil. Choose a sunny location and a fertile, well-drained soil. Improve clay or sandy soil with compost, and feed with a liquid foliar fertilizer every three weeks. Allow only two pumpkins to mature per plant.
