This cabbage relative is grown for its globe shaped roots that are creamy yellow and have a robust but sweet flavour. Roots grow 4in - 5in (10cm - 12.5cm) across and have light amber skin with a purplish top. Best if timed for harvest during cool weather of fall and winter. Use in soups, stews, or baked and mashed. Roots store well. Has a reputation for being one of the hardiest of all the root crops.

Direct-sow seed several weeks before the last spring frost date as seedlings are hardy. Choose a sunny position and a fertile, well-drained soil. Rutabaga makes a good fall crop by sowing seed in late summer, especially as frost improves the flavour. Improve clay or sandy soils with compost.
